More than 200 works of art acquired by Catherine the Great, Empress of Russia (1729-1796) will illuminate her efforts to modernize Russian culture, and to establish its capital as a centre of European art and life. This spectacular exhibition documents the grandiose scale of Catherine's patronage of the new modern European style in art and architecture. Included will be European and Russian paintings, sculpture, furniture, porcelain, gems and cameos, many of which have never been seen in North America.
